Here's a letter written by someone who saw us play at BYU last month. His name's Brian Wilson, which is cool.
"I just want to say "thanks" for the lively music in the Terrace last Wednesday. I was sitting in the Wilk, waiting for someone to play John Schmidt's "Waterfall" on the piano, when some hippie band, began playing. I'm sure it was a shock for much of the campus: electric guitars, head banging, lead singer dancing and jumping around with one shoe on. Their grooming would have only flown with MDT. The drums initially shook nearby offices. The lyrics, though incomprehensible, may have been risqué. I did catch the line "Hottie! Hottie! Hottie!" They weren't what I would have expected to find at BYU.
"They were kicked off campus once before and were almost made to move their gig to the cold climes of Brigham Square this time. What was wrong? Were they offending the spirit on campus or rather just creating a bit of culture shock? It must be hard to get your voice heard on campus when you're not Jack Johnson, EFY, or the cliché a cappella group. Perhaps their unconformity is the way they express themselves in a university and city with such deeply rooted traditions and norms.
I don't criticize BYUSA for inviting Elizabethan Report to perform. It offered a unique view of another form of self expression which could actually deepen and enrich our own culture."
Eyes Lips Eyes, formerly known as Elizabethan Report (ER), is a spirited indie/alternative rock band which formed in Provo, Utah. They stuffed their bags and headed to the West Coast and introduced California to their aggressive new-wave musical style that has elements of punk rock, pop and funk influences. They create a style that generates a chaotic yet controlled substance. The band is influenced by All-American rock bands such as the Talking Heads, The Strokes and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
